When do you use the word was in a sentence?

You use "was" in a sentence when you are talking about:

1. Past Simple Tense (Singular & Third Person Plural)

* For actions or states that happened in the past:

* "The cat was sleeping on the couch."

* "I was at the park yesterday."

* "They were happy to see each other."

* For past descriptions:

* "The building was very tall."

* "The food was delicious."

2. Past Continuous Tense

* For actions that were happening at a specific time in the past:

* "I was reading a book when you called."

* "They were playing football outside yesterday afternoon."

3. Past Perfect Tense

* For actions that were completed before a specific time in the past:

* "He had already eaten by the time I arrived." (Had + been + eating)

* "She was happy because she had finished her homework." (Had + finished)

Remember:

* "Was" is used with singular subjects (I, he, she, it, and singular nouns).

* "Were" is used with plural subjects (we, you, they, and plural nouns).
