Here's how to use them correctly:
* Three dots for a single omission within a sentence:
"The quick brown fox jumps... over the lazy dog."
* Four dots for an omission at the end of a sentence:
"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog... and then sleeps."
* Use brackets to indicate added words within the ellipsis:
"The quick brown fox jumps... [over] the lazy dog."
Important Notes:
* Don't use ellipsis points at the beginning of a quote. It's unnecessary to indicate that words were removed from the beginning of the original quote.
* Make sure the ellipsis points accurately represent the omitted words. Don't distort the meaning of the quote.
* Don't overuse ellipsis points. Use them sparingly to avoid making your text appear choppy or unclear.
