What is the origin of meaning Laurasia?

Laurasia is a supercontinent that existed during the Mesozoic era, specifically from the late Triassic period (around 250 million years ago) until the early Cenozoic era (around 66 million years ago).

The name "Laurasia" was coined by German meteorologist Alfred Wegener in 1912. He combined the names of two continents:

* "L"aurasia - from "Laura"sia, referring to Laurentia (the ancient continental core of North America)

* "A"urasia - from "Eura"sia, referring to Eurasia (the combined landmass of Europe and Asia)

Thus, Laurasia represented the northern supercontinent that formed when Pangaea, the supercontinent that existed before Laurasia, began to break apart.
