Who complied the first English dictionary?

The first English dictionary was compiled by Robert Cawdrey in 1604. It was titled "A Table Alphabeticall of Hard Words, explaining the hard words used in our English tongue, with the etymologies and definitions thereof".

While Cawdrey's dictionary was small and focused on difficult words, it paved the way for the larger and more comprehensive dictionaries that would follow.
